In the fifty years since Max first cried "Let the wild rumpus start!," Maurice Sendak's classic picture book has become one of the most highly acclaimed and best-loved children's books of all time. Now, we are excited to announce that R. JOHN WRIGHT will produce Sendak's enchanting characters in the medium of molded felt and plush!

Where the Wild Things Are is one of those truly rare books that can be enjoyed equally by a child and a grown-up. Max dons his wolf suit in pursuit of some mischief and gets sent to bed without supper. Fortuitously, a forest grows in his room, allowing his wild rampage to continue unimpaired. Sendak's color illustrations (perhaps his finest) are beautiful, and each turn of the page brings the discovery of a new wonder.

One of the most beloved author-illustrators of the 20th century, Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) was awarded the International Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration in 1970. He is the only American to ever receive this honor. It gives us great pleasure to add Maurice Sendak to the list of legendary author-illustrators whose work we've had the pleasure of bringing to life in our studio.

The RJW Where the Wild Things Are collection will be led by "Max" who will be made entirely of 100% wool felt and fully jointed. Standing approximately 8" tall, Max will have a distinctive custom face mold, a black mohair wig, and delicately hand painted features. He will come costumed in his all-felt removeable wolf suit as shown in the illustration with his crown and scepter.

The two Wild Things shown in the illustration above - "Moishe" and "Bernard" - will accompany Max on his adventure. Made entirely of wool felt and plush fabrics, the Wild Things will be fully jointed and will stand approximately 11" tall. Each will have molded hand painted features, fearsome claws and teeth, delicate airbrushed shading, and hand painted eyes.

Produced at the R. John Wright workshop in Bennington, Vermont in worldwide limited editions, each of the characters in the collection will come inside a deluxe presentation box with a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity and the forms for owner registration. Matched number sets will be offered to the lowest-numbered pieces in the series.

The Where the Wild Things Are collection will be available through all RJW authorized retailers. They will also be available by direct purchase from the R. John Wright Company Store. Photos and pricing will be posted on the Web site as they become available.
